Salesmen!!!

Busy weekend on the home front. Worked on Saturday and working double today. Yesterday the wife and I went to see Rush. Yes they are my favorite band, I have seen them too many times to count. And once again they were AWESOME! The played several songs off their new album and some classics that haven't seen the light off day for sometime.

Our seats were FANTASTIC!!! There was about 10 feet between me and the stage and NO ONE in front of us. I got some great pics on the cell phone. Alex even pointed and smiled when I held it up to take a pic. Best seats I have had since the mid 80's...

Anyway head is pounding from concert. Must shower and get to work...

Slow Week...

All week I have been a day behind. I yelled at the boy yesterday about doing something last night that he was supposed to do tonight. I apologized quickly. Since this summer we are having an understanding on something we started last year. Act like an adult and get treated like one. So far this has been working for us beginning at the end of the summer. As long as he is respectful and responsible we will treat him accordingly. He needed some shoes and clothes. He got a nice pair of sneakers for 19.99 instead of the "cool" "must have" $129.99 pair. Plus the 20 buck one is a pair of skater sneaks. He has been dressing a bit nicer for school. He selected some nice clothes that were inexpensive and saved enough money so that we let him get a nice Tony Hawk hoodie, which we knew he wanted.

All in all a good start to the school year. Keeping the fingers crossed...

Vim and Vigor...

It seems I am waking from a long sleep. I have been quiet on many a topic and then retelling mundane tales of family life and yard work. The problem is that nothing is really going on. It is politics as usual and I am tired of it. Some people got on their soap box and tried to blame the bridge collapse on the Bush Administration. I am sure someone is finding a way to do the same with the mine collapse as well.

Iraq is the same story everyday. I remember being in 8th grade maybe and listening to Made In America from The Blues Brothers. During one song Elwood (Danny Ackroyd) goes on this monologue about the world, life and everything. At one point he says "Let's take that Monroe Doctrine that says we must patrol the world and throw it out and stay home for the next few years people." Back then (say 13) I was like, ALRIGHT MAN, screw everyone else, take care of our own. in the 24 years since, my mind has not changed. I feel life would be easier if we took care of home first. We are a rich and powerful nation that is hated in many parts of the world. No amount of spending will make those people love us any more. So why toss the money and men away. Take those assets and use them here. Use them to help the cities, the farms, the failing small business, the drowning families paying $4 for gas. Happy, healthy and prosperous people are more charitable, are more productive and more inclined to give where needed. When my mortgage check bounces because I spent an extra $300 just to drive to work last month I hang up on the Friends of Police and don't watch the Jerry Lewis Telethon, because I CAN'T GIVE.

Wake up people and rise. There is a country calling you home and it is time we took it back!

Disappointment

I had the gym shorts and socks all ready for me this morning. But it amounted to nothing!!!! Even though I went to bed early we had a big storm all night and I could not sleep. At one point I got up and walked the house to check on everything. It was BOOMING!!!

I finally bought a sprinkler for the yard on Saturday. Yes it is one of those tractors that roll across the lawn. No it is not the John Deere model, just plain yellow. It is cool and it does the job, plus it is a set it and forget it machine. I can lay out the hose path, turn on the water and then the tractor reaches the end of the line it will shut off...

For some reason I have been ignoring the news lately. Which is funny when you realize that I direct 2 hours of newscasts a day. I do my job and do it well but the words kinda buzz into the background. We have one segment that deals with Iraq and I hate it. It is the same footage every day, destroyed buildings, walking soldiers and the occasional terrorist shooting off a RPG. No real news, no stories, maybe a body count and that is it. Cover it fully or do not cover it at all, do not half-ass it!

The Long Friday...

Up at 6:30am and we have a football game tonight. Going to be a long one so hold on to your hats. Last night I sat in on an Eagle Board of Review. I have currently accepted a position as District Advancement Chair, it covers 300 Troops/Packs/Crew which is about 4000 scouts. It is an overwhelming number but those who asked seem to think I have the ability to do it. Last night was my first BoR in an 'official' capacity. It was fine, I got to award one young man the rank of Eagle (he is looking at a military career as well) and one of my scouts was also there and got his Eagle. It was a very good night.

Missed the family last night. They had dinner at my parents and then came home for a quiet night. I got home after 9 and had a few words with them before going off to bed myself. The boy is doing well for the first week, we shall see how long that holds. All year we are hoping.

Another busy weekend ahead plus I have a media pass to GenCon. I might go for a day and see what is up there.

Till next time...

Today You Are A Man...

Well not really but I just left my son at the bus stop, it is his first day of High School. My wife and I are now the parents of a Freshman. We got a flyer for CLASS RINGS in the mail yesterday. Unreal!! I do not feel that old but then again I must be. He is ready, he had a great summer doing some things I never did and having a great time doing them. Band, amusement parks, camp and a 85 mile backpacking trek in New Mexico, add baseball, Yankee stadium and some free time and he was pretty well packed. Good for him, wish him luck this year. He will need a little help!!!

South Beach doing well. We did very good last night and I just made a nice lunch for myself. My parents and I went to breakfast after the boy left. I had an eggbeaters omelet (tomatoes and onions) and one slice of wheat toast. It was good and I am not hungry. Good for me!!!

Tonight is the only night I do not have to be somewhere. As soon as I am done with work I am right back here and into my shorts and into my chair. It is nice to have nothing to do for once...

Tuesday's With Bryan

Fell off the wagon yesterday. Finished a meeting, the boy was at marching band and the wife at her meetings. Sat in front of the tube and ate. At first just a simple snake that took a turn for the worse. In the end it was one of those good idea/bad idea things. Bad because it was bad for me, after being so good for 2.5 weeks. Good in the fact that I felt not only terrible about it but also like crap, physically. I still have a stomach ache. I slept terribly and had nightmares that kept waking me up. Lesson learned. Stick to this one I will (thank you Yoda)...

Last day of summer in my house. The boy starts school tomorrow, which means I am back at the gym at 7am Thursday morning. I am actually looking forward to it. It will be nice to see some old workout buddies and take the hit when they ask where I have been all summer. Being lazy is the only excuse I have, and that is no excuse at all. Take your lumps and move on.

Be well, till next time...

Sanity Returns...

We made it through the first phase of south beach. Two weeks without any carbs or fruit got to me at the end. We are now on Phase II and the menu is a bit better. I feel good and the clothes are fitting better. Let us see where this takes us.

It was the final weekend for the boy. School starts on Wednesday. He is ready and able to make it a great year. We will ride him hard until he shows he can continue where he left off last year. It will be hard the first few weeks but we will get through it. We had our summer Court of Honor with the Scouts last night. The boy said like 20 people came up and told him how much he matured this summer. "Looks like a man" was said several times. I also let him pull the car into and out of the garage yesterday, gave the wife a heart attack.

Two TV updates:

Watched the John From Cincinnati finale last night. WHAT THE FUDGE?!?!?!?!?!? I gave it a shot but man oh man did that thing jump over my head. It was an interesting show but for the love of Pete dump it and get back to Deadwood, now that was a show!!!!

On the other hand if you have BBC America and are not watching Jekyll you are missing out on FANTASTIC television. Incredible acting by James Nesbitt (sp?) and the story is awesome. Yes it is a modern retelling of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, but man oh man is it good. Do yourself a favor and find it and watch it. They are on episode 3 so you have not missed too much.

Final note: when you stop by please leave a comment. I know it is selfish but I like to see who is visiting and what they have to say. Have a great Monday!!!

Tuesday's With Bryan

Well it is official I am an old man. This morning the boy and I got up and left for an appointment. It was Freshman registration time at the High School. He got his ID photo taken, signed up for a yearbook and bought season tickets to the football games (for us to watch him at marching band). He stopped and talked to a dozen or so people and then I left for work. A new stage of life is upon us. I hope we can all survive!

Yesterday was also a bad/good day for the boy. He was dropped off at Band Camp by Grandma and then she got a call from him saying come pick me up there is no spot for me this year. My mother drove over in 5 minutes flat walked into the band room where the 2 directors were speaking. She pointed at the one not talking and gave him the come here motion. She was told that because he missed the first week of camp (which they knew about because of Philmont) they wrote him out and he no longer had a spot. But please come back next year. She wouldn't leave and then talked to the head director. For 30 minutes they talked behind closed doors and then we they came out he had a spot. Band Nazis. He has a spot and has to learn a new instrument but I am still hot about it. He left me a voice mail (I was doing the news) and you could hear the heartbreak when he said he was calling Granny to come pick him up. Thank God my mother was there, I would have went through the roof and he would have be banned for life when I was done with them. She kept a cool head and explained the WHOLE family is already involved doing Fundraising and Water duty, etc. He gave up Fall Baseball for this and that is the way they treat a 2nd year Band member WHO WANTS TO BE THERE!!!!! The thing that gets me is the fact that the head director is an EAGLE SCOUT and when we told him the boy was going to Philmont he said enjoy, it is a once in a lifetime chance, there will be a spot here when you get back.

All is fine in the end but man I am still pissed!!!

Monday Morning....Da Da Dada Da Da

Ouch, the first week of the diet is over and so far so good. I miss some things and others not at all. The hardest part was seeing the Bourne Ultimatum without popcorn!!!!! We also had 3 birthdays this weekend and I had NO CAKE!!!! Today was bad in the fact that I left my lunch at home. I was able to get a chicken Asian salad at McD's and it was OK. I think the dressing had a lot of sugar because it BURNED my mouth. At least I was able to go there and walk away with just a salad, even though I would love a No.2 with a vanilla shake.

The boy is back from Philmont and is GREAT. He had a wonderful time and would love to do it again. He also said he would love to work there once he turned 18 and could become a Ranger. That is awesome. He looked great (lost 10lbs) and talked alot about it. We are hoping to have some pictures later this week so I might post one or two.

The niece and Sister-In-Law are back home after about 6 weeks visiting. They had a great trip and we spent some nice time with them. It was a nice weekend send off as my brothers and sister and related family members all got together for a nice BBQ/birthday/welcome back boy party. We celebrated both my brothers' and my mother's birthdays. Some family friends stopped by and we ended up playing apples to apples until after midnight.

Now I have a week full of scout activities. I have something EVERY night till Friday. Should be fun and long. I just hope I can survive the diet on top of all of this...

Friday Night Lights...

The boy gets home today. I have a slight fever and the house is a mess. Other than that what a wonderful day it is.

I am resting and cleaning and doing some browsing. I want to watch a movie but I do not trust myself to do that without making some popcorn so here I sit organizing my desk.

I cannot wait till the boy is home. We talked yesterday and he had a BLAST. He figured he wants to go out there and work when he is of age. The house has been quiet without him. The wife and I survived the 2 weeks as empty-nesters and I think we will make it ;-)

Excuse me while I go change the laundry and take a little nap...

Hump Day...

Diet went well yesterday. No cheating and no real hunger pains. The food was good last night (steak) and had another nice breakfast this morning. I am surprised how easy it has been so far. No urges to cheat and I am getting enough food (I think).

Also got Hot Fuzz last night from Blockbuster. HYSTERICAL!!!!!! What a fun movie, would definitely check it out if you like action, police and British humor, scratch that, any humor. Very funny...
